A phobia happens when you feel intense fear of a particular object or situation, but know all the time that there is no real danger. But it feels so real!
A phobia is an excessive or unreasonable fear of an object, place or situation. There are simple phobias where the fear is of specific things such as spiders, needles or flying. Claustrophobia is a fear of being in a confined space where you feel “trapped” or unable to get out. A social phobia is when you are scared of a social situation or of giving a speech or presentation.
Phobias are extremely common and usually start in childhood for no apparent reason. They may be triggered by a traumatic event or might develop from an attempt to make sense of an unexpected and intense anxiety or panic. You don’t even have to be in the presence of the feared object or situation to experience immediate intense anxiety. The physical symptoms seem to start of their own accord and you find yourself with a racing heart, sweating, shortness of breath, trembling, etc. and this emotional component involves an intense fear, you don’t want to lose control, pass out or embarrass yourself.
Most people then avoid the feared situation wherever possible. This could be fairly easy if the feared object isn’t seen very often (i.e. snakes). At other times such as with claustrophobia, agoraphobia etc avoiding the feared situation limits their life severely. Trying to escape and avoid the feared object/situation can make it even more frightening.
Getting help with a phobia is one of the most common things people seek hypnosis for and it is often quickly addressed. Hypnosis techniques are so effective for dealing with this kind of problem as we can directly influence the part of our mind that triggers this fear.
Because we learn our phobias so quickly we have the ability to un-learn them quickly too. Hypnotherapy is effective in helping people to overcome even the most debilitating phobias. Sometimes only one session is all it takes to release yourself from what may have appeared to be a permanent problem. Of course, hypnotherapy will not override your normal, natural response to danger, but will help you to differentiate between a real or imagined need for a fear response.
